Xanthan Gum (Xanthan gum)
is an extracellular polysaccharide produced by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris B-1459.
Xanthan physical appearance is that of a cream-colored powder that dissolves in hot or cold water producing solutions of relatively high at low concentrations. In the petroleum industry it is used as an additive for drilling fluids, the low viscosity provides pseudoplasticity the bit where the cutting speed is high and high viscosity in the annulus where there is less cutting speed. This allows rapid penetration of the bit and at the same time as the torn annulus particles remain in suspension.
